Can men wear steel or iron rings in Islam? The hadith, and why scholars differ
One narration discourages iron rings; another mentions an iron ring as mahr. Scholars have weighed the two differently.

Scholars differ on whether men may wear rings of iron, and by extension steel. A narration in the Sunan collections describes an iron ring as the adornment of the people of Hell, and on that basis the Hanafi and Hanbali schools consider iron rings disliked. Other scholars, including Imam al-Nawawi of the Shafi’i school, held that they are not disliked, citing a hadith in Sahih al-Bukhari and Sahih Muslim and questioning the strength of the first narration.

The narration that discourages iron
In Sunan Abi Dawud, Jami’ at-Tirmidhi and Sunan an-Nasa’i, Buraydah narrates that a man came to the Prophet (peace be upon him) wearing a ring of brass, and was asked why he carried the smell of idols. He threw it away and came back wearing a ring of iron, and was asked why he was wearing the adornment of the people of Hell. When he asked what he should make a ring from, he was told silver, and not to let it reach a mithqal.
This is the same narration behind the widely taught guidance on the weight of a silver ring. Hadith scholars have discussed its chain, and some grade it weak. How much weight a scholar gives it largely decides where they land.
The narration scholars weigh against it
In Sahih al-Bukhari and Sahih Muslim, Sahl ibn Sa’d narrates the story of a man who wished to marry but had nothing to give as mahr. The Prophet (peace be upon him) told him to look for something, even if only an iron ring.
Scholars who do not consider iron rings disliked point to this: an iron ring was named as a suitable gift, and the narration is in the two most authentic collections. Scholars who do consider them disliked answer that giving or owning an iron ring is a different thing from a man wearing one, so the two narrations do not actually conflict.
There is also a narration in Sunan Abi Dawud and Sunan an-Nasa’i describing a ring of the Prophet (peace be upon him) made of iron wrapped in silver. Its chain has been discussed as well, and it is cited more cautiously.

Is a steel watch treated the same as a steel ring?
Generally not. Many scholars, including many Hanafis, treat a wristwatch as a tool rather than as a ring, and do not apply the same discussion to it. If you want certainty for your own case, ask your scholar directly.
What ring can a man wear without any disagreement?
