Jewellery care by climate: Karachi, Multan, Lahore, Quetta and the north
The same silver chain lasts a year in one city and a couple of months in another. The difference is the weather, not the chain.

How to look after jewellery in Pakistan depends mostly on where you live. Coastal Karachi and Hyderabad need sealed, dry storage because humidity and salt tarnish silver and wear plating fast; hot, dry Multan and Bahawalpur bring dust and sweat; Lahore and the Punjab plains get a humid monsoon after a scorching summer; and Quetta and the north are kind to metal but hard on skin and ring fit. 316L stainless steel copes with all of them.

Coastal: Karachi and Hyderabad
Humidity and salt are the hardest combination in the country for metal. Silver tarnishes when it reacts with sulphur compounds in the air, and moisture speeds that up, so a sterling chain can dull in a couple of months. - Wipe every piece with a dry cloth when you take it off, before salt and sweat sit overnight.
- Store silver and plated pieces in a zip bag with a silica gel sachet, never in the bathroom.
- Rinse in fresh water after the beach and dry inside the links.
- Wear 316L steel for anything daily. It does not tarnish or rust in coastal air.
Hot and dry: Multan and Bahawalpur
Dry heat is easier on metal than damp heat, but it brings two problems of its own. Fine dust settles into chain links and ring settings and acts like a very mild abrasive, slowly dulling the surface. - Every couple of weeks, soak pieces for a few minutes in warm water with a drop of dish soap.
- Brush gently with a soft toothbrush, paying attention to links, clasps and the backs of settings.
- Rinse in clean water and dry completely with a soft cloth.
- Measure ring size in the evening, at normal room temperature, not in an air-conditioned room first thing.
Lahore and the Punjab plains
Lahore and the surrounding cities get the worst of two seasons. May and June are fiercely hot, and constant sweat wears gold plating through at the points of contact: the back of a ring, the underside of a bracelet. Then the monsoon arrives in July and August with a humid spell that dulls silver. Plated pieces are best kept for evenings and functions through both.
Winter fog and cold are gentle on jewellery by comparison, though shaadi season means more occasions, and more perfume. Put perfume and attar on first and let it dry before the jewellery goes on.
Islamabad, Rawalpindi and Abbottabad
These are the easiest cities in the country for jewellery. Low humidity for most of the year means silver and plating both last considerably longer than on the coast, and Abbottabad's cool climate is kinder still. The two things to watch are the monsoon, when anything that gets wet should be dried before it is put away, and winter, when fingers shrink and rings loosen.
Cold and dry: Quetta and the north
Cold, dry air slows tarnish, so metal does well. People do less well. Fingers shrink, rings slide off with gloves, and soap and cold water trapped under a band crack the skin. Take rings off to wash your hands, dry fully, and moisturise with the rings off rather than over them. In Quetta and Gilgit-Baltistan, winter also closes roads, which is why the Quetta delivery page quotes four to six working days and warns of more between December and February.
What survives everywhere
If you move between cities, travel for work, or simply do not want to think about any of this, choose the materials that ignore climate entirely.
- 316L stainless steel: does not tarnish or rust in coastal humidity, desert heat or cold, and survives sweat and wudu.
- PVD finishes on steel: the gold or black colour is bonded into the surface rather than plated on, so it lasts far longer than electroplating, though a hard knock can still scratch it.
- Titanium: similarly unbothered by climate, and very light.
- Real gold: does not tarnish anywhere, but it is soft and scratches easily.
