Rhodium plating explained: why white jewellery is plated and how long it lasts
The bright white on most white jewellery is a layer thinner than a hair’s width. Here is what it does and when it wears.

Rhodium plating is a very thin electroplated layer of rhodium, a bright white platinum-group metal, applied over white gold, silver or fashion metals. It gives a brilliant white finish, resists tarnish and scratches better than silver, and can reduce skin contact with the metal underneath. On a ring worn every day it typically begins to show wear within months to a couple of years, while earrings and pendants keep it much longer.
What rhodium is
Rhodium belongs to the platinum group of metals. It is one of the whitest and most reflective metals, does not tarnish in air, and is considerably harder than gold or silver. It is also rare and expensive, and brittle in bulk, which is why jewellery is almost never made of solid rhodium. It is used almost entirely as a thin finishing layer.
Why white jewellery gets plated
| Base metal | Why rhodium is added |
|---|---|
| White gold | White gold alloys are naturally slightly yellowish or greyish; rhodium gives the bright white look people expect |
| Sterling silver | Stops tarnish while intact and makes the surface harder and brighter |
| Brass or alloy fashion jewellery | Provides a white-metal finish and a tarnish-resistant surface over an inexpensive base |
| Platinum | Occasionally, to restore a bright finish; platinum is already white |
White gold surprises people more than anything else here. Many are never told that the bright white colour is plating, and only find out when a ring they have worn for a year starts to look faintly warm on the palm side.
How rhodium plating is applied
- The piece is polished, because plating reproduces the surface beneath it: scratches under rhodium stay visible through it.
- It is cleaned thoroughly, often ultrasonically and with an electrocleaning step, to remove oils and polishing residue.
- On some bases, especially silver and brass, an underlayer such as nickel or palladium may be applied to help adhesion and act as a barrier.
- The piece is placed in a rhodium plating solution with an electric current, and rhodium deposits onto the surface.
- It is rinsed and dried. The whole process on one piece takes minutes; the preparation is where the quality comes from.
Rhodium layers on jewellery are very thin, typically well under a micron. Rhodium is brittle, and much thicker layers can crack, so it is not simply a case of more being better.
How long rhodium plating lasts
There is no fixed number, because it depends on thickness, the base metal, the type of piece and how it is worn. Friction is the main enemy. These are rough expectations for reasonable-quality plating:
| Piece | Contact and friction | When wear often shows |
|---|---|---|
| Everyday ring | Constant: palm side meets bags, steering wheels, desks | Months to a couple of years |
| Occasional ring | Low | Several years |
| Bracelet | Moderate, mainly on the underside and clasp | A year or more |
| Pendant or necklace | Low, mainly skin and fabric | Several years |
| Earrings | Very low | Many years |
On a ring, wear appears first on the inside and on the palm-side of the band. On white gold it shows as a slightly warmer tone. On silver it shows as areas that begin to tarnish when the rest does not. On brass-based fashion jewellery it shows as a yellowish patch, which is the clearest sign of all.
What speeds wear up
- Friction against hard surfaces, other rings and bangles.
- Chlorine from pools and cleaning products.
- Abrasive cleaning: toothpaste, baking soda and rough cloths.
- Sweat, perfume and lotions left on the surface for long periods.
- Wearing rings for housework, wudu and washing dishes several times a day — water alone is mild, but the soap and scrubbing are not.
Replating: what is involved
When rhodium wears, a jeweller can replate it. The piece is cleaned, polished to remove scratches, and plated again. Many jewellers who work with white gold offer this. It can be done many times over the life of a piece, although each polish removes a very small amount of the base metal.
- Worth doing: white gold and good silver pieces with sentimental or real value.
- Worth asking about: stone-set pieces, since some stones do not tolerate the cleaning and plating process and may need to be removed first.
- Rarely worth it: inexpensive fashion jewellery, where replating can cost as much as the piece.
Making rhodium last longer
- Put rings on last, after perfume, cream and hair products, and take them off first.
- Remove rings for gym, cleaning, cooking and gardening.
- Clean with lukewarm water, a drop of mild soap and a soft brush, then pat dry.
- Store pieces separately so harder stones and other metal do not scratch the surface.
- Rotate everyday rings if you have more than one; spreading wear slows it on each.
Black rhodium also exists, used to give a dark, gunmetal finish, usually as a contrast detail. It tends to wear faster than standard rhodium, and wear shows more obviously because the colour difference is greater.
Many of Zayr’s women’s rings are rhodium-plated over a hypoallergenic base and set with cubic zirconia, which is why the care advice above applies to them directly. The styles are in the women’s ring collection, and the difference between CZ and diamonds is explained separately.
Rhodium is a finish, not a metal you are buying. Protect it like a finish and it will look new for a long time.
Common questions
How long does rhodium plating last?
On a ring worn every day, wear often begins to show within months to a couple of years, usually on the palm side. Pendants and earrings experience less friction and can keep their plating for many years. Thickness, base metal and care all make a large difference.
Is rhodium plating the same as silver?
No. Rhodium is a separate platinum-group metal that is whiter, harder and does not tarnish in air. It is often plated over silver to stop the silver tarnishing and to brighten it. Silver on its own will darken over time; intact rhodium will not.
Does white gold need rhodium plating?
Most white gold jewellery is rhodium-plated because the alloy itself is slightly yellowish or grey. When the plating wears, the ring looks a little warmer in tone. A jeweller can replate it, and many owners do so every year or two for rings worn daily.
Is rhodium-plated jewellery good for sensitive skin?
Rhodium itself rarely causes reactions, and intact plating covers the base metal. The caveat is what lies underneath: if a nickel underlayer or nickel-containing base was used, it can reach the skin once the rhodium wears. Ask the seller if you have a nickel allergy.
Can rhodium-plated fashion jewellery be replated?
Technically yes, but it is rarely economical. Replating involves cleaning, polishing and electroplating, and the cost can match the price of an inexpensive piece. It is usually worth doing for white gold and good silver, not for low-cost fashion jewellery.
