Black chains for men: how the finish is made and how long it lasts
Every black chain is a coating on something else. The only question worth asking is what kind.

A black chain for men is almost always a steel or alloy chain with a black surface finish, because very few metals are black on their own. The best finish for daily wear is black PVD on 316L stainless steel, which bonds a hard coating to the metal and lasts years. Painted, lacquered and cheaply plated black chains chip and fade quickly, especially with sweat and wudu.

How long black PVD lasts
PVD is thin, measured in microns, but it is very hard and bonded to the metal rather than sitting on top of it. On a chain, wear shows first where links rub against each other and at the clasp, and on the underside of the chain where it moves against skin and fabric. With ordinary daily wear that is a matter of years rather than months.
The base metal matters just as much. On 316L steel, if the finish does wear at one point after a long time, what shows underneath is grey steel that does not rust or react. On brass or cheap alloy, a worn patch exposes a yellow or copper-coloured base metal that can tarnish and mark skin.
Care for a black chain
- Wear it freely in water, sweat and wudu if it is PVD on 316L steel. Water does not affect the finish.
- Rinse off sea water, pool chlorine and heavy sweat with fresh water, then pat dry.
- Clean with warm water, a drop of mild dish soap and a soft cloth. No toothpaste, baking soda or metal polish.
- Store it on its own or in a pouch, not loose against rings, keys or other chains that scratch.
- Put perfume and attar on first and let them dry before wearing the chain. The oils leave a dull film on matte black.

Styling a black chain
Black reads as modern, understated and a little edgy. It shows up less than a silver or gold chain of the same width, because it does not reflect light, so you can usually go one step wider than you would in silver.
- On a white or light t-shirt, black gives the strongest contrast. It is the most noticeable a black chain gets.
- On a black or dark top, a black chain almost disappears. Go wider, or choose a polished black rather than matte so it catches some light.
- With a kurta, a black chain works best with dark or earthy fabrics and casual settings. For weddings and Eid, silver or gold tones usually suit the clothing better.
- With a watch, a black chain pairs easily with a black dial or a black strap, and fine with steel.
- Mixed with silver: a black chain layered with a thin silver one looks deliberate. Keep the widths different.
- Mixed with gold: possible, but harder. Keep the gold thin and let the black be the main piece.

Which black chain to buy
- For daily wear: black PVD on 316L steel, 4–6 mm, Cuban or box. Solid, wearable, and the finish lasts.
- For occasional wear or a trend: a cheaper coated chain is fine, as long as you know the black will wear.
- Avoid: any black chain that does not name its base metal, and anything with visible brush marks or drips in the finish in close-up photos.

Matte or polished black
Matte black has a soft, flat look and hides fingerprints and small scuffs well, which makes it the easier finish for daily wear. Polished black has a slight shine and looks dressier, but it shows scratches and smudges more readily. On a Cuban or rope chain, where the links catch light at angles, polished black keeps some of the texture visible; on a flat box chain, matte usually looks cleaner.

Common questions
Does a black chain fade?
It depends on the finish. Black PVD on stainless steel wears very slowly, usually showing only at clasps and contact points after years of daily wear. Painted, lacquered or electroplated black chains can chip or fade within weeks to months.
Can I wear a black steel chain in the shower?
A black PVD chain on 316L steel is fine in the shower and during wudu, since water does not affect the steel or the coating. Rinse off soap film occasionally and avoid abrasive cleaners, which can wear the finish.
What is a black chain made of?
Usually stainless steel, sometimes titanium, brass or silver, with a black surface finish applied on top. The finish can be PVD, ion plating, rhodium plating, oxidising or paint. The base metal and the process determine how long it lasts.
Can black chains be repaired if the colour wears off?
Not easily. Re-applying PVD requires stripping and recoating the whole chain in industrial equipment, which is rarely worthwhile for a single piece. On 316L steel, a small worn spot simply shows grey steel, which does not rust.
Does a black chain go with a kurta?
It can, especially with dark or earthy fabrics in casual settings, with the top buttons open. For weddings and Eid, silver or gold tones usually suit festive clothing better.
