Chain thickness in mm: what 3 mm, 5 mm and 10 mm actually look like

For most men, a chain between 4 and 6 mm wide is the right thickness: visible, strong, and understated enough to wear every day. Go 2–3 mm for something discreet or under a formal shirt, 7–10 mm for a bold look on an average to broad build, and 12 mm and up only when you want the chain to be the centre of the outfit. Build and neck size should move you up or down one step.

Width is the measurement that decides how loud a chain reads, far more than length, metal or style. It is also the one most often misjudged from a product photo, because photos are taken close up where every chain fills the frame.

How chain width is measured

Chain width is measured across a single link, from one outer edge to the other, in millimetres. It is not the thickness front to back. Two chains listed at 6 mm can look different if one is a flat curb and the other a round rope, because rope reads wider than its number and flat chains read narrower.

1. 1Take a ruler and look at the millimetre marks for 3, 5, 8 and 12 mm. Ten seconds, and it recalibrates everything you see in photos.
2. 2If you own a chain, measure it across one link with a ruler or vernier. Decide whether you want more or less than that.
3. 3Lay a strip of paper cut to the width you are considering across your collarbone in a mirror.

The four width bands

Adjusting for build and neck size

Proportion is the whole game. A chain that is right on one man looks thin on a broad one and heavy on a slim one. Measure your neck with a tape where a shirt collar sits.

• Neck under 37 cm or a slim frame: start at 3–4 mm. A 6 mm chain will look substantial on you.
• Neck 37–42 cm, average build: 4–6 mm is your range. Most men are here.
• Neck 42 cm or more, broad shoulders or chest: step up to 6–8 mm. A 3 mm chain can disappear.
• Short neck: keep to the narrower end of your range and choose a longer length, so the chain draws a line downward instead of sitting at the throat.
• Long neck: a wider chain at a shorter length balances it well.

Width by style

Width with a pendant, and when layering

With a pendant, the chain should look at least as substantial as the pendant is heavy. A small pendant suits 2–4 mm. A medium pendant suits 3–5 mm. A large or heavy pendant needs 5 mm or more, or the chain looks strained and eventually stretches.

Width and weight in the hand

A wider chain is also a heavier one, and weight is something you feel all day. Up to about 6 mm most men forget a steel chain is there. At 10 mm and above, you notice it when you lean forward, when you sleep in it, and in hot weather against the back of the neck.
