Figaro chains: the 3:1 pattern, widths and when to wear one

Three short links and one long one. It sounds like a small detail and it changes how the chain reads completely.

A figaro chain is a flat curb-style chain with a repeating pattern, usually three short links followed by one elongated link. It reads slightly more decorative than a plain curb without looking ornate, and 4–6 mm at 55 cm is the most wearable size for men. It is strong, lies flat, and works both with a pendant and on its own.

The 3:1 pattern, and its variations

The classic figaro is three short, round links and one long oval link, repeated along the chain. The pattern comes from Italian chain-making and is sometimes still sold as an Italian chain. Variations exist and are worth recognising in listings:

  • 3:1, the standard. Balanced, easy to wear, the one most people picture.
  • 1:1, alternating one short and one long. Busier and more open.
  • 5:1 or other ratios, with more short links between each long one. Closer to a plain curb, with a quieter rhythm.
  • Diamond-cut figaro, with small flat facets cut into the links so they catch light more like a rope chain.

Underneath the pattern, a figaro is built like a curb chain: flat, twisted links that lie against each other. That is why it shares the curb's strengths. It does not kink, it lies flat on skin, and it carries weight well. Our chain styles explained article compares it directly with Cuban, rope and box.

Choosing a width

WidthHow the pattern readsBest for
2–3 mmBarely visible; looks like a fine chainUnder a formal shirt, small pendants
4–5 mmPattern clearly visible up closeDaily wear, office, the best first figaro
6–7 mmPattern visible from a distanceOpen collars, kurta with top buttons undone
8–10 mmBold, the long links become a featureStatement wear, broad builds

Below about 3 mm the pattern mostly disappears, so if you want the figaro look to register at all, 4 mm is the practical minimum. For how width sits on different necks and builds, the chain thickness guide goes further.

Figaro and pendants

Figaro is a good pendant chain, with one quirk. Because the chain is flat and the long links are slightly wider, a pendant bail sometimes catches on a long link rather than sliding to the centre. On a well-proportioned chain it settles fine; on a very small bail it can sit off-centre until you move it.

  1. Check that the bail opening is larger than the chain width, and ideally larger than the clasp so it can slide on without opening anything.
  2. Choose a pendant that is visually lighter than the chain or matched to it. A heavy pendant on a 3 mm figaro drags and twists the links.
  3. Pick a small or medium pendant for a figaro. A very large pendant competes with the pattern; a plain curb or box chain is better for those.
  4. Wear the chain at 55–60 cm with a pendant, so the pendant sits on the chest rather than at the throat.

The pendant chains for men guide explains bail sizes and what different pendants signal.

Formal or casual?

Figaro sits in the middle, which is why so many men in their thirties and forties settle on it. It is dressier than a Cuban and less showy than a rope. The width decides which way it leans.

  • Formal: 3–4 mm, silver tone, worn under a buttoned shirt or with a sherwani or waistcoat where only a glimpse shows.
  • Smart casual: 4–5 mm with an open-collar shirt or a polo. This is where figaro looks most natural.
  • Eastern wear: 5–6 mm with a kurta or shalwar kameez, top buttons open, no pendant. The pattern gives it presence without needing a second piece.
  • Casual: 6–8 mm over a plain t-shirt. At this width it starts sharing territory with a Cuban.

What to check before buying

  • The ratio, from a close photo. Some listings call any chain with long links a figaro.
  • Weight in grams, to confirm it is solid. Long links make a hollow figaro easier to disguise.
  • Clasp type, ideally a lobster clasp that clicks firmly.
  • Material and finish. Zayr's men's chains are 316L steel, and gold and black tones are PVD rather than plating, which matters on a flat chain where the link surfaces rub together.

Length and care

Figaro chains are flexible for their width, so they need less extra length than a Cuban. 50–55 cm suits most men on its own, and 55–60 cm with a pendant. The long links are the ones that rub hardest against skin and collars, so on a plated chain they are where the colour wears first. On steel or silver, a wash in warm soapy water every few weeks keeps the gaps inside the long links clean.

One more practical point: because the long links are slightly wider than the short ones, a figaro can catch on knitted jumpers and loose-weave shawls in winter. It is a small thing, and it is the reason some men wear their figaro over the collar of a shirt rather than directly against a sweater.

A figaro is what a curb chain looks like when it has made a small decision. That is exactly its appeal.

Common questions

What is a figaro chain?

A figaro chain is a flat, curb-style chain with a repeating pattern of short and long links, most commonly three short links followed by one long one. It is strong, lies flat, and looks slightly more decorative than a plain curb chain.

Is a figaro chain good for a pendant?

Yes, especially with small and medium pendants. Make sure the bail is larger than the chain width and ideally the clasp, and keep the pendant visually lighter than the chain. Very large pendants suit a plain curb or box chain better.

Figaro or Cuban chain: which is better?

Neither is stronger in a meaningful way, since both are curb constructions. A Cuban looks denser and bolder; a figaro looks a little dressier and more varied. For office wear or with a kurta, figaro is often the easier choice. For streetwear, Cuban.

What width figaro chain should a man wear?

4–5 mm is the best starting point: the pattern is visible up close and the chain is subtle enough for daily wear. Below 3 mm the pattern disappears, and above 7 mm the chain becomes a statement piece.
