Silver rings for women in Pakistan: 925 silver, rhodium-plated or steel
A “silver ring” can mean sterling silver, a silver colour or a plating. They behave very differently in a Lahore summer.

A silver ring for women in Pakistan is usually one of three things: 925 sterling silver, a rhodium-plated ring that looks like bright silver, or silver-tone stainless steel. Sterling has metal value but tarnishes, rhodium plating looks brightest but wears with time, and steel is the toughest but heavier and plainer in design. Pick based on whether you want metal value, sparkle or low maintenance.

925 sterling silver
Pure silver is too soft for a ring, so sterling silver mixes 92.5% silver with 7.5% other metal, usually copper. The stamp 925 marks it. It has real metal value, can be polished back to brightness and can be resized by a jeweller.
The catch is tarnish. Silver reacts with sulphur compounds in the air, in sweat and in some foods, and forms a dark film. In humid cities during the monsoon it happens noticeably faster. Rhodium-plated rings
Rhodium is a hard, bright white metal from the platinum family. A thin layer of it is plated over a ring to give that brilliant, mirror-white finish seen on most sparkly silver-coloured rings. Many sterling silver rings are rhodium-plated too, precisely to stop them tarnishing.
Rhodium plating does not tarnish, but it is a layer, and layers wear. It usually thins first on the inside of the band and the underside that meets the palm, where the ring rubs against everything you hold. Stainless steel
Silver-tone stainless steel does not tarnish, shrugs off water and sweat, and scratches far less. For women's rings it has two limits: it is harder to work into very fine, delicate settings, and it cannot be resized. It suits plain bands and simple designs better than intricate stone work.
How silver ring prices work
Silver rates change daily, like gold, so a quoted price goes out of date quickly. What stays the same is how the price is built.
- Real silver: the ring's weight in grams, multiplied by the day's silver rate, plus making charges for the design. Stones and rhodium plating add to it. Check the day's rate with your local sarafa or jeweller.
- A plain light sterling band is modest in metal cost; most of a detailed ring's price is making and stones.
- Rhodium-plated fashion rings over a base alloy are priced by design and finish rather than weight. Typical ranges run from about Rs. 1,000 to a few thousand rupees.
- Steel rings are priced by design and finishing, and sit in a similar range for simple bands.
- If a heavy ring is sold as 925 silver at a price below the silver it would contain, it is not solid 925 silver.
Which one should you buy?
- You want metal value, or a ring to keep for years and polish: 925 sterling silver.
- You want the brightest sparkle and delicate stone settings at a lower price: rhodium-plated.
- You want a plain band you never take off, including for wudu: stainless steel.

Questions to ask before buying
Whether you are at a counter or messaging a seller online, a few direct questions settle what you are buying in under a minute.
- What is the metal, exactly? Sterling silver, plated base metal or stainless steel?
- Is there a 925 stamp, and where on the ring is it?
- Is the ring rhodium-plated, and over what?
- What are the stones — cubic zirconia, glass or something else?
- Can it be resized, and if not, what happens if the size is wrong?
A seller who knows the product answers all five without hesitation. Vague replies to the first two questions are the most common sign that a “silver” ring is a silver colour.
Making any silver-coloured ring last
- Put it on after perfume, attar and lotion, not before.
- Take it off for washing up, cleaning with bleach and swimming in chlorinated pools.
- Store it in a small zip bag or pouch with a silica gel sachet, particularly in the monsoon.
- Polish sterling with a silver cloth. Never polish plated rings — wipe them with a soft dry cloth instead.

Common questions
What is the difference between 925 silver and silver-plated rings?
A 925 sterling silver ring is 92.5% silver all the way through and has real metal value. A silver-plated or rhodium-plated ring has a thin bright layer over another metal, so it looks similar but wears over time and carries little metal value unless the base is silver.
Does a 925 silver ring tarnish?
