Choosing a chain for a men's pendant: bail, strength, length

The right chain for a men's pendant is one the bail can slide over, strong enough to carry the pendant's weight without stretching, and long enough that the pendant sits on the chest rather than at the throat, usually 55–60 cm. A curb or box chain of 3–5 mm suits most pendants. Match the chain's visual weight to the pendant's, and check the clasp before you check anything else.

Start with the bail

The bail is the loop at the top of the pendant that the chain passes through. It is the part everyone forgets to measure, and it decides which chains are possible at all.

1. 1Measure the inside opening of the bail, the gap the chain passes through, in millimetres.
2. 2Compare it with the chain's width, and then with the clasp. The clasp is almost always wider than the chain.
3. 3If the bail is wider than the clasp, the pendant slides on and off freely. This is the ideal.
4. 4If the bail is wider than the chain but narrower than the clasp, the pendant can only go on by opening a jump ring at the end of the chain. Fine to do once, carefully, but not something to do weekly.
5. 5If the bail is narrower than the chain, the pairing does not work. Do not force it; you will bend the bail.

Strength: match the chain to the pendant

A pendant puts all its weight on one point of the chain, and it swings every time you move. Over months, a chain that is too light for its pendant stretches, kinks at the bail, or opens at the clasp. The rule of thumb is visual: the chain should look at least as substantial as the pendant.

Avoid snake chains and very fine box chains for anything heavier than a small pendant. Both kink permanently at the bail. The chain styles explained article covers why each construction behaves the way it does.

Length with a pendant

A pendant adds its own drop below the chain and its weight pulls the chain a little lower. So a pendant chain wants a bit more length than a plain one.

• 50 cm (20"): pendant sits high on the chest, near the collarbone. Good for small pendants and slim necks.
• 55 cm (22"): pendant sits just below the collarbone. The most common choice.
• 60 cm (24"): pendant sits mid-chest. Right for medium and large pendants, and hides easily under a shirt.
• 65–70 cm: pendant sits low. A streetwear length, worn over a t-shirt or hoodie.

What different pendants read as

A plain chain says very little. A pendant always says something, which is worth being deliberate about.

• Religious pendants, such as Allah, Ayat-ul-Kursi or a small Quranic verse: personal and widely worn here. Many men choose to wear these under the shirt and remove them before entering a washroom, out of respect for the text.
• Initials or a name: personal and often a gift. Reads as sentimental rather than fashion.
• Dog tags and plain bars: minimal and practical. Easy with Western clothing, good for engraving a date.
• Coins and medallions: classic, a little old-fashioned in a good way.
• Crosses: a religious symbol for Christian wearers; worth knowing that it is read that way here.
• Large streetwear pendants: fashion first. They suit a plain t-shirt and very little else.

Stopping a pendant from flipping or sliding

• Flat chains like curb and box hold a pendant facing forward better than round chains.
• A pendant that keeps flipping round usually has a bail that sits parallel to its face. A pendant with a bail set at 90 degrees to the face lies flat.
• If the clasp keeps sliding round to the front, the pendant is heavier than the chain can balance, or the clasp is the loosest part of the loop. A heavier chain fixes both.

Metal and finish

Match the chain and pendant in both metal and tone. A silver-tone pendant on a gold-tone chain rarely looks deliberate. Where you can, match the finish too: a polished pendant on a matte chain can look like two separate purchases. And put the harder metal on the chain, because the chain does the moving and the rubbing; a soft chain wears quickly where a steel bail rubs against it.
