Father's Day gifts: accessories a conservative father will wear

Most fathers here have worn the same ring for twenty years. Do not try to replace it. Work with it.

Father's Day in Pakistan follows the date used in most countries, the third Sunday of June. The best gifts for most fathers here are practical and understated: a plain band or signet ring in silver tone, a simple bracelet beside his watch, or a better version of something he already wears. Order about a week ahead, because June heat and courier schedules do not bend around the date.

Father's Day is not observed here the way Eid is, and plenty of fathers are mildly puzzled by it. That works in your favour: a small, useful gift given without fuss is exactly the right size for the occasion.

When is Father's Day, and when to order

The third Sunday in June falls anywhere between the 15th and the 21st. Check the calendar for the year, then work backwards.

  • Big cities such as Lahore, Karachi and Islamabad: order at least five days before.
  • Smaller cities and towns: allow a week to ten days.
  • If a ring size might need changing: order two weeks early, so there is time for an exchange before the day.
  • If Eid is close in the calendar that year: order earlier still, because courier networks slow down in the run-up to Eid.

Working with the ring he already wears

A great many fathers here wear a silver ring, often with an aqeeq, firoza or other stone, and many wear it on the right little finger. For some it is a family piece; for others it is connected to their faith and the example of the Prophet's (PBUH) silver ring. Either way, do not try to replace it.

Instead, match its tone. A silver-tone bracelet or chain beside a silver ring looks deliberate. A gold-tone piece beside it looks like two gifts from two people who did not talk to each other.

Comfort matters more than style

  1. Measure the ring over the knuckle. With age, knuckles often get larger while the base of the finger does not, so a ring that fits the base may not go on at all.
  2. Choose a comfort-fit band where you can. The rounded inside is easier on older hands and lets water drain during wudu.
  3. Check the clasp. Lobster clasps are secure but fiddly for stiff fingers. A box clasp or a fold-over clasp on a bracelet can be done up with one hand.
  4. Go light. A heavy chain or bracelet that looks impressive in a photo can feel like a burden to someone who is not used to wearing jewellery.
  5. Keep the width modest. Around 5 to 6 mm for a band, 6 to 9 mm for a bracelet. Conservative fathers read anything wider as showy.

Sizing without asking him

Your mother probably knows his ring size, or knows where his old rings are. If not, borrow the ring he wears and measure the inside diameter, remembering which finger it came from. For a bracelet, his watch strap tells you his wrist size: measure from the buckle pin to the hole he uses and add the width of the watch case.

A note on materials

Stainless steel is the practical choice for fathers: it does not tarnish, does not need polishing, and does not mind wudu five times a day. Zayr's men's pieces are 316L stainless steel, with gold and black tones applied by PVD. Plated brass looks fine at first but wears through where the ring touches the palm, and fathers who dislike fuss will simply stop wearing it.

Giving it without making it awkward

Many fathers here are uncomfortable being the centre of attention, and a formal presentation can make a small gift feel like too much. Hand it over after dinner, with a short note, and let him open it in his own time. If siblings are giving together, one gift from all of you is better than three separate pieces he now has to wear in rotation.

If he does not wear it straight away, do not push. Some fathers wait for Friday prayers, a family gathering or a wedding to try something new. Keep the packaging for a few days so an exchange is still possible, and remember that sellers usually give a short exchange window from delivery rather than from the day you hand it over.

Fathers rarely say they like a gift. You find out a month later, when it is still on his hand.

Common questions

When is Father's Day in Pakistan?

Pakistan follows the date used in most countries, the third Sunday of June, which falls between the 15th and the 21st. It is not a public holiday, and many families mark it quietly or not at all.

What is a good Father's Day gift in Pakistan?

A plain band or signet ring in silver tone, a simple bracelet to wear beside his watch, or cufflinks if he wears suits. Keep it understated and comfortable. If he already wears a silver ring, match that tone rather than giving another ring.

Can I give my father a gold ring?

Gold is widely held to be impermissible for men in Islam, and many fathers avoid it. Scholars differ on gold-plated and gold-coloured metals. The simplest choice is silver-tone stainless steel or silver. If in doubt, ask a trusted scholar.

How far in advance should I order a Father's Day gift?

At least five days ahead for major cities and a week to ten days for smaller towns. If there is a chance you will need to exchange a ring size, order two weeks early. Order earlier still if Eid falls close to Father's Day that year.
