Jewellery for a boyfriend: chains, bracelets and rings, subtle or bold

For most boyfriends, a steel chain or a link bracelet is the right gift: easy to size, easy to wear every day, and it does not announce anything he may not want announced. A ring is the bolder choice and needs an exact size. Engraving makes any of them personal, but keep it short and put it where only he will see it.

Chain, bracelet or ring

If he does not wear anything yet, a chain is the gift. It can live under a collar until he decides whether he likes it, which removes most of the pressure from receiving jewellery for the first time.

Subtle or bold

Width decides how loud a men's piece is, far more than style or metal. A 3 mm chain is quiet on anyone. A 6 mm Cuban is a statement on a slim build and ordinary on a broad one. Before you choose, look at what he wears and how he carries it.

• Goes quiet: formal shirts, plain t-shirts, few logos. Choose a 3 to 4 mm chain, or a bracelet under 8 mm wide.
• Goes middle: dresses well, notices trainers and watches. A 5 mm chain, a 9 to 10 mm bracelet, or a matte black band.
• Goes bold: oversized fits, streetwear, already owns a chain. A 6 to 8 mm Cuban, a heavier bracelet, or a pendant with some size to it.

Engraving, done well

1. 1Choose the surface first. The back of a flat pendant, the inside of a band, or the small tag near a bracelet clasp. Curved outer surfaces engrave poorly.
2. 2Keep it to what fits. A pendant back takes about ten to twelve characters legibly; the inside of a ring takes a date or two sets of initials.
3. 3A date is the safest choice. It is meaningful to him and means nothing to anyone else who picks it up.
4. 4Your initials are the riskiest. If his family or friends see the piece, initials invite questions a date does not.
5. 5Check the size first and engrave second. Engraved pieces generally cannot be exchanged, so a ring should fit before anyone marks it.

Keeping it discreet

A lot of relationships here are private, at least for a while, and a gift should not force a conversation he is not ready to have. A few practical points help.

A little finger or middle finger is the safest place for a gifted ring: it reads as style rather than commitment. Matching pieces are a different decision, and they tend to work better when they rhyme rather than when they are identical.

Material, briefly

Buy 316L stainless steel for anything he will wear daily. It does not mind sweat, showers, the gym or wudu, and it will not go patchy the way cheap plated brass does. Budget and timing

You do not need to spend much. A solid steel chain or bracelet in the Rs. 1,500 to Rs. 3,500 range is a real piece of jewellery, not a token, and it is the range where most gifts between couples who are not married sit comfortably. Spending a great deal more early on can make the gift feel heavier than the relationship, which is its own kind of awkward.

Order at least a week before the date you have in mind, and ten days if the piece is a ring or needs engraving. Birthdays and anniversaries do not move, so there is rarely a good reason to be waiting on a courier the evening before. If the size is wrong, most sellers allow an exchange within a short window from delivery, which is another reason to hand it over promptly rather than keeping it in a drawer for a fortnight.
