Gifts for your husband: jewellery he will actually wear

Most husbands own a watch, one ring and very firm opinions about both. Start there, not in a gift shop.

The gift most husbands in Pakistan will actually wear is a plain steel chain, a link bracelet or a simple band, in the same metal tone as the watch he already owns. Spend Rs. 2,000 to Rs. 6,000 and put the effort into matching his habits rather than into a bigger piece. The rest of this article is how to read those habits and size the piece without tipping him off.

Buying for a husband is easier than buying for almost anyone else, for one reason: you see what he wears every day, including the parts he does not show anyone. You already have the evidence. Most people just have not looked at it deliberately.

Start with what is already on him

Men are more consistent about accessories than women and far less willing to change them. Whatever he already wears sets the rules for the gift.

If he already wearsGive himWhy
A steel or silver watch, nothing elseA silver-tone link bracelet for the other wristIt matches the watch without competing with it
A gold-tone watchGold-tone PVD steel, same shadeMixed tones on one man read as an accident
A silver ring with a stoneA chain, not another ringThat ring usually has a story. Do not compete with it
A thin chain he never takes offA better version of that chain, or a pendant for itHe has already chosen the style for you
Nothing at allA 4 mm steel chain, silver tone, worn under the shirtIt can be invisible, which is what a non-wearer wants
A fitness bandA narrow bracelet for the other wristKeeps the gym kit and the jewellery apart

If he has never worn anything, do not choose his first piece to be a statement. There is a whole article on what a first piece should be, and the short answer is quieter than most gift shops would suggest.

Match the gift to how he dresses

  • Office and formal shirts all week: a thin chain that sits under a buttoned collar, or a narrow bracelet that clears a shirt cuff. Nothing wider than about 8 mm at the wrist.
  • Shalwar kameez most days: a chain between 50 and 55 cm shows at an open placket and hides when it is buttoned. A plain band or signet ring suits kurta sleeves better than a bracelet does.
  • Jeans, t-shirts and trainers: this is the husband who can carry a 6 mm Cuban chain or a heavier bracelet. Check the width against a ruler before you order, not against the photo.
  • Gym, cricket or a physical job: 316L steel only, and nothing with stones. Anything plated will not survive his routine.
  • Very conservative, wears nothing and likes it that way: a single ring, plain, in steel or silver tone. Or reconsider jewellery and give something else.

By occasion

The occasion changes the piece more than it changes the budget. Anniversaries have their own logic, which is covered in the anniversary gift guide, and birthdays at each price band are broken down separately. What is specific to a husband is below.

  • Eid: something he can wear with the new kurta on Eid morning, so it has to arrive before chaand raat. A ring or a chain, not a bracelet that disappears under a sleeve.
  • A new job or promotion: a bracelet that sits well beside his watch. It gets seen in meetings, which is the point.
  • Your first year: a plain band if he does not already wear one. Many men here never had a ring at the nikah, and a year in is a natural moment for it.
  • No occasion at all: replacing something he wears to death. Men almost never buy themselves a new version of a chain they love.

Sizing it without asking him

  1. Chain length: check the collar size on his formal shirts. A 15 to 16 inch collar (about 38 to 41 cm) suits a 50 to 55 cm chain sitting at the collarbone. A 17 inch collar or above, go 55 to 60 cm.
  2. Bracelet length: take the watch strap he wears daily, measure from the buckle pin to the hole he actually uses, and add the width of the watch case. That is his wrist, near enough. Add 2 cm for the bracelet.
  3. Ring size: borrow the ring he already wears, measure the inside diameter in millimetres, and check which finger it lives on. A ring from his little finger is two to three sizes smaller than his ring finger.
  4. If there is no ring to borrow, buy a chain or a bracelet instead. Guessing a man's ring size is how gifts end up in drawers.

What to skip

  • A pendant with a symbol he did not choose. He will be asked what it means and he will not know.
  • Leather bracelets for daily wear. Heat, sweat and wudu five times a day finish them within a year.
  • Anything wider than his watch case on the wrist. It turns the watch into the accessory.
  • A ring for the left ring finger if he already wears a wedding band there. Two bands on one finger is a look very few men want.
  • Anything that needs polishing or careful storage. If he has to look after it, he will not wear it.

Budget, briefly

Around Rs. 2,000 buys a solid steel chain or a plain band. Rs. 3,000 to Rs. 6,000 buys a heavier chain, a Cuban bracelet or a chain-and-bracelet pair in the same finish. Above that, the money is better spent on getting one piece exactly right than on a bigger one. Zayr's men's pieces are 316L stainless steel, with gold and black tones done in PVD rather than electroplate, which is why they suit a husband who never takes anything off.

One practical point: every order here is cash on delivery, so if you want it to be a surprise, deliver it to an address where you, not he, will be the one paying the rider.

A husband's gift is not measured on the day he opens it. It is measured by whether it is still on him in six months.

Common questions

What jewellery gift is best for a husband in Pakistan?

A plain 316L steel chain, a link bracelet or a simple band ring, in the same metal tone as the watch he already wears. These suit office wear and shalwar kameez alike and survive daily wear, wudu and heat. Match his existing habits rather than trying to change his style.

How can I find my husband's bracelet size secretly?

Use the watch strap he wears every day. Measure from the buckle pin to the hole he uses, add the width of the watch case, and you have his wrist measurement. Add about 2 cm to get a comfortable bracelet length.

Should I give my husband gold jewellery?

Many men in Pakistan do not wear gold because it is widely held to be impermissible for men in Islam. Gold-plated and gold-coloured metals are a question on which scholars differ. If you are not sure where he stands, silver-tone steel avoids the question, or ask him or a trusted scholar first.

How much should I spend on a jewellery gift for my husband?

Rs. 2,000 to Rs. 6,000 covers a genuinely good steel chain, bracelet or ring. Above that, spend the effort on getting the tone, width and size exactly right rather than on a larger piece, since fit decides whether he wears it.

Can I send a gift to my husband by cash on delivery without him paying?

Not if it is delivered to him, because the rider collects payment from whoever receives the parcel. For a surprise, have it delivered to your own address, a relative's, or somewhere you will be when it arrives, then give it to him yourself.
