Gifts for your wife: rings, bangles and necklaces, sized in secret

Her jewellery box already contains her ring size, her bangle size and her preferred metal. You just need ten quiet minutes with it.

For most wives the best jewellery gift is a ring, a pair of bangles or a necklace in the metal tone she already wears, sized from a piece she already owns. Rings and bangles need a measurement, which you can take quietly from her jewellery box. A necklace needs no size at all and is the safe choice if you cannot get one.

The general method for choosing a gift is covered in the jewellery gift guide. This article is about the three categories wives are most often given here, and the sizing problem that comes with two of them.

Ring, bangles or necklace: how to choose

CategoryChoose it ifSize neededMain risk
RingShe wears rings daily, or owns several she rotatesYes, exactWrong size, or wrong finger
BanglesShe wears churiyan or kangan with eastern clothesYes, but forgivingToo small to get over the knuckles
BraceletShe wears western clothes or a watch oftenRoughlyLow
Necklace or pendantShe wears open necklines, or you cannot get a sizeNoA pendant symbol she does not like

One more thing to check before choosing: what she wears most is usually what she likes most, not what she needs more of. A woman with twelve bangles and one ring is not short of rings. She is telling you she prefers bangles.

Also look at when she wears it. Pieces that come out only for weddings tell you about her occasion taste; pieces she wears to the market, to work or around the house tell you what she actually reaches for. A gift aimed at the everyday group gets worn far more often.

Finding her ring size without asking

  1. Find a ring she wears regularly, not one from the back of the box. Rings that do not fit are exactly the ones that stop being worn.
  2. Work out which finger it lives on. Watch for a day. A ring from her middle finger will be too big for her ring finger by roughly one to two sizes.
  3. Trace the inside of the ring on paper with a sharp pencil, both sides, and measure the diameter across the widest point in millimetres. Put the ring back where it was.
  4. If the ring you borrowed is a thin band and the gift is a wide one, go up a quarter to a half size.
  5. If you honestly cannot get a ring, an open adjustable ring or a stacking band worn on the index finger is more forgiving than a solitaire.

Finding her bangle size

Bangles here are sold in inch sizes, usually 2.2, 2.4, 2.6 and 2.8, which is the inner diameter. Take one of her rigid bangles, not a kara with a gap, lay it on a ruler and measure straight across the inside at the widest point. Most adult women wear 2.4 or 2.6.

If her bangles are a mix of sizes, go with the one she wears with her best clothes. Women often keep a looser size for summer and a closer size for occasions, and the occasion size is usually the one she prefers. The full measurement method is in the bangle size guide.

Choosing a necklace when you have no size to go on

  • Look at the necklines she wears most. High, worked necklines on formal kameez leave no room for a necklace. Round and V necks on everyday clothes do.
  • A 40 to 45 cm chain sits at the collarbone and works with the widest range of necklines. Longer than that is for layering or pendants.
  • Choose a pendant shape, not a pendant message. A small stone or a simple drop is worn daily; a word or a symbol is worn when she remembers.
  • If she already wears a chain daily, buy a pendant that fits its bail rather than a second chain.

Occasions that are specific to a wife

  • Munh dikhai, the gift on the wedding night: traditionally jewellery, and usually a ring or a bracelet. Order it weeks ahead, because the week of the wedding has no time for an exchange.
  • Eid: bangles or a ring she can wear on Eid morning with a new outfit. Ask what colour her Eid suit is, which is a normal question and reveals nothing.
  • The first child: a pendant or a bracelet is more practical than a ring, because fingers change size in pregnancy and for a while after.
  • Anniversaries: these have their own logic, which the anniversary guide covers year by year.

Being honest about what you are giving

Fashion jewellery is a perfectly good gift for a wife, and plenty of women prefer it for daily wear precisely because they are not worried about losing it. The only mistake is presenting a plated piece as gold. Zayr's women's rings, for example, are rhodium- or gold-plated over a hypoallergenic base and set with cubic zirconia, and they are described that way. Say what it is. Plated pieces last longer with a bit of care, mainly keeping them away from perfume and water.

If the ring does not fit, exchanges are normally within a set window from delivery — seven days in Zayr's case — so give it promptly rather than saving it for a date two weeks away.

Her ring size is already in the house. The husbands who get it wrong are the ones who guessed instead of looking.

Common questions

What is the best jewellery gift for a wife in Pakistan?

A ring, bangles or a necklace in the metal tone she already wears. Rings and bangles need a size, which you can take from a piece she owns. If you cannot get a size, a necklace or pendant at 40 to 45 cm is the safe choice.

How do I find my wife's ring size without her knowing?

Borrow a ring she wears regularly, note which finger it goes on, and trace the inside on paper to measure the diameter in millimetres. Match that to a size chart. If the gift is a wider band than the ring you measured, go up a quarter to a half size.

What bangle size do most women in Pakistan wear?

Most adult women wear 2.4 or 2.6, which refers to the inner diameter in inches. Measure one of her rigid bangles straight across the inside. If you are between two sizes, choose the larger, since a small bangle will not pass over the hand at all.

What jewellery is given as munh dikhai?

Traditionally a ring, a bracelet or a light set, given by the groom to the bride on the wedding night. Choose something she can wear afterwards rather than a heavy set, and order weeks in advance so there is time to exchange the size.

Is fashion jewellery an acceptable gift for a wife?

Yes. Many women prefer it for daily wear because they are not anxious about losing it. The important thing is to be honest about what it is — plated metal and cubic zirconia, not gold and diamonds — and to choose a piece that matches her taste.
