How to buy jewellery as a gift when you have no idea what they like

You do not need to guess their taste. You need to read what they already wear — the evidence is on their hands.

Jewellery is a good gift and a stressful one, because it is personal in a way a scarf is not. The people who get it right are not the ones with better taste. They are the ones who paid attention for ten minutes before ordering.

Step one: read what they already wear

Everything you need is already on them. Next time you see them, note four things:

  1. Metal tone. Do they wear gold, silver, rose, or a mix? Whatever they wear most is the answer. This is not a place to broaden their horizons.
  2. Scale. Delicate and barely-there, or substantial and visible? People are consistent about this and rarely cross over.
  3. Where. Someone who wears three rings and no necklace is telling you where to spend.
  4. Whether it changes. If they wear the same two pieces every day, buy something that fits that rotation. If it changes with the outfit, you have more room.

Step two: pick a category by how risky it is

CategoryRiskWhy
Bracelet or cuffLowSizing is forgiving, style is neutral, hard to get badly wrong
Simple chainLowWorks alone or layered under what they already own
Pendant on a chainMediumYou are picking a symbol as well as a piece. Personal but assumes taste
EarringsMediumSafe if they wear earrings daily; check whether their piercings are healed and single
RingHighSizing is unforgiving and the meaning can be read in ways you did not intend
Anything engravedHighestBeautiful when it lands, unreturnable when it does not

If you do not know them well, buy a bracelet or a chain. If you know them very well, the higher-risk options are where the good gifts live.

Step three: get the size right without asking

  • Bracelets: measure a bracelet they own flat, end to end, or measure their wrist and add 1.5–2 cm for comfortable movement. Most women's bracelets land at 17–19 cm; most men's at 20–22 cm.
  • Chains: 40–45 cm for a woman's collarbone chain, 50–55 cm for a man's. Longer for a pendant.
  • Rings: borrow one from the right finger and measure the inner diameter, or press it into soap. See our ring sizing guide for the chart.
  • When in doubt on any of them, go slightly larger. Shortening is easy; adding metal is not.

The part people get wrong

Buying up. A more expensive piece is not a better gift if it is not their style, and there is a specific failure mode where an expensive gift becomes an obligation — too valuable to not wear, too unlike them to enjoy. A well-chosen mid-priced piece they reach for weekly beats an heirloom-priced one in a drawer, every time.

The other one: buying for the occasion instead of the person. Eid, anniversaries and weddings push people toward something ceremonial. Most of the jewellery people love is ordinary and gets worn on ordinary days.

Practical notes for ordering here

  • Order at least a week before you need it. Cash on delivery across Pakistan usually runs 2–4 working days, longer for smaller cities and longer again around Eid.
  • Not sure which piece to pick for the occasion? The Eid gift guide breaks it down by relationship and budget.
  • Check the exchange policy before you order, not after. Sizing exchanges are normal and a seller who makes them difficult is telling you something.
  • Ask for it to be sent without a printed invoice showing the price if it is a surprise. Any decent seller will do this — we do it on request.
  • Keep the packaging until they have tried it on. It makes an exchange painless.
The best jewellery gift is one they would have chosen themselves, bought by someone who was paying enough attention to know that.

Common questions

What jewellery is safest to buy as a gift?

A bracelet or a simple chain. Both are forgiving on sizing, work with what someone already owns, and carry less unintended meaning than a ring. Match the metal tone to what they already wear and the risk drops further.

How do I find out someone's ring size secretly?

Borrow a ring from the correct finger and measure its inner diameter in millimetres, or press it into a bar of soap and measure the impression. If neither is possible, US 6–7 for women and US 9–10 for men are the most common sizes — buy there and plan for an exchange.

Should I spend more on a jewellery gift?

Not necessarily. A piece that matches how someone actually dresses gets worn constantly; an expensive piece that does not match their style tends to stay in a box. Fit to the person before you scale the budget.

How long does delivery take in Pakistan?

Cash-on-delivery orders typically arrive in 2–4 working days to major cities and a little longer elsewhere. Around Eid, order a week or more ahead — courier networks slow down considerably.
