Women's necklace lengths: where each one actually sits
40 cm and 45 cm sound like nothing. On a collarbone, one sits above the neckline and one sits below it.

Necklace length is the specification people skim past, and it is the one that decides whether a piece is worn or admired in a box. Five centimetres is the difference between a chain sitting on the collarbone and disappearing under a neckline.
Measure yours in a minute
- Drape a phone charging cable or a strip of ribbon around your neck where you want the necklace to sit.
- Pinch where the ends meet at the back, lay it flat and measure to the pinch.
- Add 2–3 cm if a pendant is going on — a pendant pulls the chain down and forward.
- Stand up while you do it. Measuring hunched over a phone adds a centimetre or two.

If you are buying one necklace, buy 45 cm. It works with almost every neckline, takes a pendant without crowding the throat, and it is the length that looks the way people imagine a necklace looking.
Matching the length to the neckline

Adjusting for height and build
- Petite frames: shorter lengths keep proportion. A 60 cm chain that reads as elegant at 5'8" reads as oversized at 5'0".
- Taller frames: go one step longer than the chart suggests. A 45 cm chain can sit higher than expected on a longer neck.
- Broader necks: 45–50 cm rather than 40 cm. A choker that has to stretch to fit sits uncomfortably and looks it.
- Longer necks: chokers and collars are genuinely flattering here in a way they are not on everyone.
Pendants change the number
A pendant does two things: it adds its own drop below the chain's resting point, and its weight pulls the chain lower than it would otherwise sit. Between them, expect a pendant to move the visual endpoint down by 2–4 cm.
So a 45 cm chain with a 3 cm pendant behaves like a 50 cm chain. If you are matching a pendant to an existing chain, measure the pendant's drop and subtract it from where you want the piece to end. Which link style you hang it on matters too.
Between two lengths, take the longer one. An extender costs almost nothing and a necklace that sits too high has no remedy at all.
