Buying jewellery in Islamabad and Rawalpindi: one route, two very different cities

In Islamabad and Rawalpindi, the practical split is simple: buy real gold and silver in person from a jeweller you trust, and buy everyday steel chains, bracelets and rings online, where the metal grade and exchange terms are written down. Two cities, two ways of shopping

The twin cities sit next to each other and shop very differently, mostly because of how they were built. Islamabad is planned around sectors, each with its own markaz, so shopping tends to happen in compact sector markets and a few larger centres like Jinnah Super and Aabpara. Rawalpindi is older and denser, and its bazaars, Raja Bazaar and Saddar most obviously, are the kind of places where you walk, compare and bargain.

Plenty of people live in one city and work in the other, so in practice most men use both. The sector markets are convenient for a quick look; the older bazaars have more choice and more room to negotiate. Neither is reliably better for men's fashion jewellery, because in both places the question that matters, what is this actually made of, often goes unanswered.

What to check before buying men's jewellery

1. 1The metal, by name. Stainless steel should come with a grade, and 316L is the one you want for daily wear. Silver should carry a 925 stamp. Silver colour is not silver.
2. 2The finish. A gold or black tone is either plating or PVD. PVD is bonded into the surface in a vacuum and survives sweat and water far longer.
3. 3Solid or hollow. Pick up two chains of the same width. A hollow chain is noticeably lighter and dents easily.
4. 4The clasp. A lobster or box clasp holds; a small spring ring on a heavy chain is the first thing to fail.
5. 5The length, in inches or centimetres. A chain that sits right on one man sits on the collarbone of another.
6. 6The exchange terms, before paying.

What the weather does to metal here

Islamabad has one of the kinder climates in the country for jewellery. Humidity is low for most of the year, so silver tarnishes slowly and plating lasts noticeably longer than it would in Karachi. Rawalpindi is similar, if a little hotter and dustier in the older parts of the city.

There are two exceptions. The monsoon, roughly July and August, brings heavy rain and a humid stretch where silver dulls faster and anything wet should be dried before it is put away. And winter changes ring fit: fingers shrink in the cold, so a ring that is snug in June can slide off a cold hand in January.

• Islamabad's sector addressing is a gift. A complete address with house, street and sector, like House 12, Street 40, F-10/4, is delivered noticeably faster than a landmark-based one.
• Bahria Town straddles both cities. Either city name works, but the phase number is essential, because the phases are large and easy to confuse.
• In older Rawalpindi, around Raja Bazaar, Committee Chowk and the Dhokes, add a nearby landmark. Map apps handle those streets badly.
• For a Blue Area or sector office, add the floor and company name, and give a number that is answered during working hours.

Gifts, weddings and the twin-city calendar

A good share of men's jewellery bought in the twin cities is bought for someone else: a brother's graduation, a father's Eid, a groom's walima. Two things help. Ask for the price to be left off the invoice, which any decent seller will do. And order at least a week ahead of a date, ten days in wedding season, so a size can be swapped if needed. Grooms have a short list of their own, and it is shorter than most expect.

Buying gold and silver in the twin cities

For real gold or silver, the online question does not really arise. For men, silver rings are the traditional choice, and many men ask a trusted scholar about gold before buying anything in it.

The sector market is faster and the bazaar has more choice. Neither will tell you the steel grade unless you ask.
