Mother's Day jewellery: comfortable, classic pieces she will wear

Your mother has worn the same gold bangles since her wedding. The gift is not a replacement. It is something that sits comfortably beside them.

Mother's Day in Pakistan is celebrated on the second Sunday of May. The jewellery mothers here actually wear is comfortable and classic: a light bracelet, a pair of simple bangles, a plain ring, or a fine chain that sits under a dupatta without catching on it. Choose a metal tone that matches what she already wears, keep it light, and order a week ahead.

When to order

The second Sunday in May falls between the 8th and the 14th. That is also when summer arrives properly in much of the country, which matters for the kind of piece you choose as well as for delivery.

  • Major cities: order five days to a week before.
  • Smaller cities, towns and remote areas: allow ten days.
  • If the gift is a ring or bangles and the size is uncertain: order two weeks ahead so an exchange is possible before the day.
  • Eid moves around eleven days earlier each year, so in some years it falls in the same fortnight as Mother's Day. In those years, order well before the Eid rush.

Start with what she already wears

Many mothers wear the same few pieces every day: gold bangles or a kara from their wedding, a pair of small earrings, perhaps a ring. These are not going to be replaced by a gift, and trying to compete with real gold by buying something that looks like it rarely lands well. Choose something that sits comfortably alongside them.

If she wearsA good giftWhy
Gold bangles or a kara every dayA slim gold-tone bracelet for the other wristBalances her look without competing

Mostly silver or white metalA silver-tone bangle or ringMatches her established taste

Western clothes for workA classic bracelet or a slim chainUnderstated for the office

What comfortable means, in practice

  1. Light weight. A bracelet or chain she forgets she is wearing will be worn far more than one she notices all day.
  2. Nothing that catches. Prong-set stones and open links snag on chiffon and lawn dupattas. Smooth bangles and bezel or channel settings do not.
  3. Easy clasps. A box clasp or a bangle she can slip on is easier than a small lobster clasp, especially for hands that are less nimble than they were.
  4. Ring sizes measured over the knuckle. Knuckles often widen with age, so a ring that fits the base of her finger may not pass over the joint.
  5. Hypoallergenic metals. If she has ever reacted to cheap jewellery with itching or a green mark, choose a hypoallergenic base or stainless steel.

Classic pieces that suit most mothers

  • A pair of plain bangles in her usual tone. Easy to wear, works with eastern clothes, and a common way to add to what she already has.
  • A slim bracelet with a secure clasp. Better for mothers who wear a watch or western clothes.
  • A plain or lightly set ring. A single small stone in a bezel setting is classic and practical.
  • A fine chain, 40 to 45 cm, with a small pendant. It sits under a dupatta and is visible with an open neckline.
  • Earrings, if you know she wears them. They need no sizing, but check whether she wears studs or drops before you buy.

Sizing it quietly

For bangles, measure the inside diameter of one she wears regularly; 2.4 and 2.6 are the most common adult sizes on the traditional scale. For rings, borrow one from the finger the gift will go on, or ask a sister or your father, who may well know. The measuring methods are in the bangle and ring guides.

Materials, and being honest

Fashion jewellery is a fine gift for a mother, especially for everyday pieces she would not want to risk losing if they were gold. Zayr's women's rings, for example, are rhodium- or gold-plated over a hypoallergenic base and set with cubic zirconia. Tell her what it is. Mothers usually know the difference, and the gift is about the thought rather than the metal.

Plated pieces last longer if they are kept away from perfume, attar and water, so a short note about care is worth passing on with the gift.

If you live away from home

Plenty of children send Mother's Day gifts from another city or from abroad. Two things matter. First, with cash on delivery the person who receives the parcel pays, so arrange for a sibling or relative at the same address to receive and pay, or have it sent to them to hand over. Second, include the phone number of someone who will definitely answer, because a missed call from a rider can push delivery past the day.

Then call her when it arrives. For a mother living in a different city from her children, the call on the day often means as much as the piece, and it is also the moment to check that the bangles actually go over her hand.

The gift a mother wears most is the one that asks nothing of her.

Common questions

When is Mother's Day in Pakistan?

Mother's Day in Pakistan is celebrated on the second Sunday of May, which falls between the 8th and the 14th. It is not a public holiday, but it is widely marked with gifts and family meals.

What jewellery is a good Mother's Day gift?

A light bracelet, a pair of simple bangles, a plain ring or a fine chain with a small pendant. Choose the metal tone she already wears and avoid pieces that catch on dupattas or have fiddly clasps. Comfort matters more than size.

Should I buy my mother gold-plated jewellery?

Yes, if it suits her taste and you are honest that it is plated. Plated pieces work well for everyday wear because she need not worry about losing them. Keep them away from perfume and water, and choose a hypoallergenic base if her skin is sensitive.

How far ahead should I order a Mother's Day gift?

Five days to a week for major cities and about ten days for smaller towns. If you are buying bangles or a ring and are unsure of the size, order two weeks ahead so an exchange can be made before the day.
