Does stainless steel jewellery rust? A straight answer
Stainless steel does not rust. Cheap steel sold as stainless does, and telling them apart takes about ten seconds.

Short answer: 316L stainless steel does not rust, does not tarnish and does not turn skin green, in a Karachi summer or anywhere else. Longer answer: a lot of what is sold as stainless steel in this market is not 316L, and that material absolutely does mark — which is why the question keeps getting asked.
Why stainless steel resists corrosion at all
Steel is iron plus carbon, and iron rusts enthusiastically. Stainless steel adds chromium, which reacts with oxygen to form an extremely thin, invisible, tightly bonded oxide layer over the whole surface. That layer is what stops water and air reaching the iron beneath.
The useful property is that the layer repairs itself. Scratch it, and it re-forms within seconds wherever there is oxygen. This is why a scratched steel chain does not start rusting from the scratch, the way a scratched plated piece starts wearing from the scratch.
The grades, and why the number matters

Molybdenum is the whole difference between 304 and 316, and what it specifically defends against is chlorides — which means salt. Sweat is salty. Coastal air is salty. Sea water is very salty. In Karachi that distinction stops being academic within one summer.
What the orange spots actually are
Sometimes a genuine 316L piece develops small orange specks, usually near a clasp or a weld. That is almost never the piece rusting. It is surface contamination — free iron particles left from tooling during manufacture, or picked up afterwards from contact with ordinary steel.
Those particles rust normally, on top of a surface that is not rusting at all. They lift off with a soft cloth and a little dish soap and they do not come back. If you get orange marks spreading from within the metal, and they return after cleaning, the piece was not 316L — which is ultimately a question of what you paid for.
Testing what you already own
- The magnet test. 316L is very weakly magnetic at most — a fridge magnet will barely notice it. 201 and 430 are noticeably magnetic. This is the quickest indicator, though not conclusive, since cold-working can make even 316L slightly magnetic.
- The salt test. Mix a strong salt solution, leave the piece in it for 24 hours, rinse and dry. 316L comes out unchanged. Lower grades come out with pitting or spots. Only try this on something you are willing to risk.
- The clasp test, which is free. Look closely at the clasp and any welds after a few months of wear. Corner-cutting shows there first, because clasps are often a different grade to the chain.
- Weight and price. 316L costs meaningfully more per kilogram. A chain that is far cheaper than the fair range for its weight is not made of the expensive alloy.
Living with steel in a coastal city
- 316L is genuinely fine in Karachi. It is the grade specified for marine hardware; a chain is a much easier job than a boat fitting.
- Rinse with fresh water after swimming in the sea. Not because the steel will corrode but because dried salt crystals are abrasive and dull a polish over time.
- Do not store it wet. Steel is fine wet, but anything else in the drawer is not, and a damp pouch is bad for everything in it.
- Chlorine in pools is harder on steel than sea water, oddly. 316L still handles it; 304 does not enjoy it at all.

Does stainless steel jewellery rust?
