Gifts for a brother: Eid, graduation, a new job or his wedding

Brothers are the easiest people on any gift list, as long as you do not buy them what you would wear.

A steel chain or a link bracelet is the easiest good gift for a brother, whatever the occasion. For Eid keep it simple and under about Rs. 3,000; for a graduation or a first job go for something he can wear to work; for his wedding choose something that goes with his wedding outfit or will be worn after it. Size is rarely a problem unless you choose a ring.

Younger or older changes the gift

  • A teenage brother: a plain steel chain or a black bracelet. Nothing expensive, because it will be worn to school, cricket and everywhere else. Steel survives that; plated metal does not.
  • A university-age brother: this is where style starts to matter. Look at what his friends wear and what he has already bought for himself, and stay in the same range.
  • A brother in his first job: something that works with office shirts — a thin chain under the collar or a narrow bracelet beside his watch.
  • An older, married brother: his wife probably knows his taste and his sizes. Ask her. It is the most reliable shortcut on this list.

Eid

Eid gifts between siblings are small and frequent, which is exactly why jewellery works: a chain is noticeably more thoughtful than cash without costing much more. Give it the night before, on chaand raat, so he can wear it with the Eid kurta. That means ordering well before the last week of Ramadan, when couriers slow down across the country.

A chain between 50 and 55 cm shows at the open collar of a kurta, which is how he will wear it on Eid day. A bracelet tends to disappear under a kameez sleeve, so it is the better gift for a brother who mostly wears western clothes.

Graduation

A graduation gift should last into the next stage of his life, so choose a piece that suits work rather than university. A signet ring or a narrow bracelet is a good choice. Engraving the year is a nice touch if the piece has a flat surface, but confirm the size first. The graduation gift guide covers engraving and timing in more detail.

A new job

The first salary is a proper milestone here, and a gift from a sibling marks it well. Choose something visible but understated: a bracelet no wider than his watch case, or a thin chain that sits under a buttoned collar. Avoid anything bold. He will be meeting new colleagues, and he should not have to explain his jewellery to them.

If he is starting somewhere with a strict dress code, such as a bank or a government office, a plain band ring is the safest choice of all. It is accepted almost everywhere and never looks out of place in a meeting.

Sizing, if you have to guess

  • Chains need almost no guesswork. 50 to 55 cm suits most men, and 55 to 60 cm suits a broader build or a thicker neck.
  • Bracelets: most men's wrists take a 20 to 22 cm bracelet. For a slim teenage brother, go towards 19 to 20 cm.
  • Rings: only buy one if you can borrow a ring he already wears, or if his wife or mother knows his size. Otherwise choose a chain or bracelet.
  • If you are buying for a younger brother who is still growing, choose a chain. It fits at fifteen and still fits at twenty.

His wedding

At the functions themselves a groom wears very little: the ring, and whatever metalwork is part of the sherwani. A chain under a closed sherwani collar will not be seen. So a sibling's wedding gift works better either as part of the outfit or as something for afterwards.

  • Cufflinks or a bracelet for the walima, if he is wearing a suit. Match the tone to his watch.
  • A chain and bracelet set for the honeymoon and the months after, when he is back in ordinary clothes.
  • Matching pieces for the brothers and cousins in the baraat. Everyone wears the same bracelet or ring on the day, and it photographs well. Order these early and ask about stock first, since you need several identical pieces in the same finish.

These are typical ranges for steel fashion jewellery, not quotes. Real gold and real silver are priced by weight on the day's rate and are a different kind of purchase altogether.

Gold, and what a brother will wear

Gold is widely held to be impermissible for men in Islam, and many brothers will not wear a gold ring or chain even as a gift. Gold-coloured steel is a question on which scholars differ, so if you are not sure, choose silver or black tone. Zayr's men's pieces are 316L stainless steel, with gold and black tones applied by PVD, which suits a brother who will wear it everywhere and look after it nowhere.

Buy your brother what he would wear, not what you would. He will not tell you the difference, but he will not wear it.

Common questions

What is a good jewellery gift for a brother in Pakistan?

A 316L steel chain at 50 to 55 cm or a link bracelet. Both suit most ages and styles, need little sizing, and survive daily wear. For a working brother, a narrow bracelet that sits beside his watch is a good alternative.

What should I give my brother on Eid?

A plain steel chain in the Rs. 1,500 to Rs. 3,000 range, given on chaand raat so he can wear it with his Eid kurta. Order before the last ten days of Ramadan, when couriers across Pakistan slow down considerably.

What should a sibling gift the groom at his wedding?

Something for the walima or for after the wedding, such as cufflinks, a bracelet or a chain and bracelet set. A chain is not visible under a closed sherwani collar. Avoid buying the nikah ring itself unless he has asked you to.

How much should I spend on a gift for my brother?

Typically Rs. 1,500 to Rs. 3,000 for Eid or a birthday, Rs. 3,000 to Rs. 6,000 for a graduation or first job, and from Rs. 5,000 for his wedding. These are typical ranges for steel fashion jewellery, not fixed prices.
