Matching jewellery to kurta and kameez necklines
The neckline decides the necklace. Get that one decision right and the rest of the outfit mostly sorts itself out.

Match the necklace to the shape of the neckline. V and sweetheart necks suit a pendant that follows the V; round necks suit a chain that sits just below or inside the edge; boat necks suit a longer chain or bold earrings; high necks and band collars usually look best with earrings and no necklace. If the gala is heavily embroidered, skip the necklace and let the embroidery do the work.
Eastern wear has a lot more neckline variety than a western wardrobe, and many of those necklines already carry work: gota, thread embroidery, mirror work, lace. That changes the rules slightly, because the neckline is often jewellery already.

Round and V necks: the easy ones
Most everyday kameez have a round or V neck, and both suit a necklace well. With a round neck, pick a length that sits comfortably inside the curve, usually 40–45 cm, so the chain does not touch the fabric. With a V, follow the line: a pendant ending 2–3 cm above the point of the V lengthens the neck and looks intentional.
Boat necks and wide necklines
A boat neck runs horizontally from shoulder to shoulder, so a short chain just adds another horizontal line. There are two good answers. Either wear a longer chain at 50–60 cm to add a vertical line, or leave the neck bare and put the emphasis on earrings. Jhumkas and chandbalis are at their best with boat necks, because nothing competes with them.
High necks and band collars
High necks and mandarin collars have been popular for years, and they are the neckline where most jewellery mistakes happen. A short chain gets trapped behind the collar and cannot be seen; a pendant sitting on the collar looks like it has slipped.
- Default: no necklace. Long earrings, and bangles or a kangan on one wrist.
- If you want a necklace: a long chain, 60 cm or more, worn over the fabric with a single pendant.
- For formal high necks with embroidery at the collar: earrings in a matching tone only.
- Hair up. A high neck with long earrings looks best when the earrings are visible.
Embroidered necklines
Formal and festive kameez often have heavy work on the gala: zari, gota, sequins, mirror work. That embroidery is doing the job of a necklace. Adding one creates two decorated things in the same place, and they compete.
- Skip the necklace.
- Pick earrings that take a colour from the embroidery, gold with zari, silver with silver thread, or a stone colour that repeats a thread colour.
- Add bangles or a kangan, which balances the outfit away from the neckline.
- If the embroidery is light, a very fine chain worn higher than the work, on skin, can still work.
Dupattas change things too
A dupatta draped across both shoulders hides most of the neckline, which makes earrings and bangles more important than a necklace. Worn on one shoulder, it frames one side of the neck, so a pendant sitting slightly off-centre can look odd; a short chain centred in the neckline works better. Chiffon and net dupattas snag on pendants with prongs, so choose smooth, bezel-set pendants on days you will be adjusting a dupatta constantly.

A quick check in the mirror
When you are not sure, get fully dressed, dupatta included, and look from a normal distance rather than close to the mirror. Ask one question: where does the eye go first? If it lands on the face and the neckline together, the balance is right. If it bounces between a necklace, earrings and embroidery without settling, take one thing off, usually the necklace. It is almost always easier to remove a piece than to find the right one to add.
