Why the baraat is different
The baraat is the most formal function in most Pakistani weddings and the most photographed. The bride is at her most dressed, traditionally in red or deep jewel tones with a full bridal set. Guests dress up more than for the mehndi or the nikah, which is exactly why the line between dressed-up guest and competing with the bride is easiest to cross here.
Nobody enforces that line, but everyone notices it, including in the photographs that circulate for years afterwards.
Signals that read as bridal
- A nath. In most Pakistani families it is a bridal piece and reads as one immediately.
- A large matha patti or a heavy jhoomar together with a tikka. A small tikka alone is fine for most guests.
- A full matching set — necklace, earrings, tikka, bangles and haath phool — in the same heavy style.
- Red or maroon with heavy gold-tone jewellery. The combination is the bride’s, even if neither piece is.
- Bangles up to the elbow. A few on each wrist is a guest; a full choora-length stack is not.
