If you want specific jewellery for Eid, order online in the first half of Ramadan, or at the very latest ten days before the expected moon sighting, because couriers slow sharply in the final days and many parcels booked late arrive after Eid. Keep chand raat itself for what it does best: glass bangles and mehndi.
What chand raat is actually like
The moment the moon is announced, markets that were already busy become packed. Churiyan stalls stay open late into the night, mehndi artists set up on pavements and in salons with long queues, and families go out together for the last pieces of the Eid outfit. It is one of the best nights of the year, and one of the worst for choice, fitting rooms and patience.
Because Eid depends on the moon sighting, nobody knows for certain until that evening whether Ramadan will run 29 or 30 days. That uncertainty is the whole reason ordering late is a gamble.
Why the courier cannot save you
- Volume. The last ten days of Ramadan are the busiest period of the year for couriers in Pakistan, and normal delivery windows roughly double.
- Fewer attempts. Riders carrying far more parcels make fewer repeat attempts on each one.
- Eid holidays. Courier offices close or run skeleton staff for several days around Eid, so a parcel still in transit on chand raat often sits until after the holidays.
- The 29th. If the moon is sighted a day early, you lose a full delivery day you were counting on.
- Remote areas. Deliveries to the north, Balochistan and smaller towns take longer at the best of times.

What chand raat is good for
- Glass bangles in exactly the colour of your Eid outfit. Take a swatch of the fabric or the dupatta.
- Mehndi, obviously, though queues can run for hours. Book a salon earlier or have someone at home do it.
- Cheap, fun pieces you do not mind losing or breaking.
- The atmosphere. Many families go out on chand raat for the outing rather than the shopping.
Buying bangles on the night
- Know your size before you go. Most adult women wear 2.4, 2.6 or 2.8, and the stall will not have time to help you work it out.
- Try them on anyway. Sizes vary between makers, and glass bangles have no give at all.
- Buy one or two spare bangles in each colour. Glass breaks, and a single cracked bangle ruins a matched set.
- Ask the seller to wrap each set in newspaper. A plastic bag of loose glass bangles in a crowd rarely survives the journey home.
- Put bangles on before mehndi, or wait until it is completely dry. Sliding glass over wet mehndi smudges the design.
Staying safe in the crowd
- Do not wear real gold to a chand raat bazaar. Crowds are exactly where snatching and pickpocketing happen.
- Keep your phone and cash in a zipped bag worn in front, not in a back pocket or an open tote.
- Agree a meeting point with your family in case you are separated.
