Walima guest jewellery: softer, lighter, and evening-ready — for women and men

Walima jewellery for guests is usually softer than baraat jewellery: pastels, silver or rose tones, pearls, and one elegant piece rather than a full set, because the walima tends to be an evening event with a calmer mood. Men attending a walima can wear a watch, a simple ring, and cufflinks or a discreet chain, depending on whether they are in a suit, a sherwani or a kurta with a waistcoat.

How the walima differs from the baraat

The walima is hosted by the groom’s family after the nikah and rukhsati, and it is the wedding function with a direct basis in the Sunnah: in Sahih al-Bukhari and Sahih Muslim, the Prophet (peace be upon him) told Abdur-Rahman ibn Awf to hold a walima, even if only with one sheep. In Pakistan it has become the most polished and often the most western-leaning function, with the bride frequently in pastels, silver or champagne rather than red.

For guests, that shifts everything a notch lighter. What looked right against a heavy baraat outfit can look like too much at a walima.

For women: colour and metal

• Choose one focal piece. Earrings suit most walima necklines; a fine necklace suits an open or plain neckline.
• Pearls are particularly good at a walima. They soften a formal outfit and sit well with pastels.
• Clear cubic zirconia comes alive under evening hall lighting. A pair of well-cut drop earrings does more than a heavy set.
• Keep bangles slim and few, or swap them for a single bracelet.
• If you wore statement earrings to the baraat, bring them back with a different outfit rather than buying new ones.

Avoiding a repeat of the baraat look

The same guests usually attend both functions and appear in both sets of photographs. You do not need new jewellery for the walima, only a different arrangement. Move the lead from neck to ears or the other way round, switch from stacked bangles to one bracelet, or change metal tone to suit a lighter outfit. For men: accessories by outfit

The walima is the one function where men’s accessories are actually seen, largely because many men wear suits. The rules are simple.

• Match your ring, watch and cufflinks in one tone — all steel, all black or all gold-tone.
• Keep to one ring. A walima is not the place for a stack.
• Many men avoid gold at weddings for religious reasons, and steel, silver or black finishes suit a suit perfectly well.
• If you are the groom’s brother or close family, a slightly dressier watch is the easiest upgrade.

Practical notes for an evening function

At the baraat, guests dress for the celebration. At the walima, they dress for the evening. The jewellery should know the difference.
