Statement rings at weddings: bridal looks, guest outfits and the one-hand rule

A statement ring is a large, eye-catching ring — a big centre stone, a cluster or a heavily worked design — meant to be seen across a room. At a Pakistani wedding the simplest rule is one statement ring, on one hand, with the other hand kept lighter. That keeps the ring special beside bangles, mehndi and a heavy outfit instead of competing with all three.

The one-hand rule

Wedding outfits here are already busy: embroidery at the sleeves, bangles on both wrists, often a haath phool, and henna on the hands for half the functions. A statement ring works because it is the single brightest point on the hand. Put one on each hand and neither is the focus any more.

• Statement ring on the right hand, which is the hand people see when you greet, eat and give salami.
• On the other hand, a thin band or nothing at all.
• If you are wearing a haath phool, let it be the statement on that hand and keep rings to the other.
• Middle or ring finger for the statement ring. The index finger is bold and gets in the way of eating with your hands.

Matching the ring to each function

For the bride

Bridal hands carry a lot already: churiyan, kangan, a haath phool, and mehndi from wrist to fingertip. A bride rarely needs a separate statement ring on the baraat day, and a very large ring can make hands look cluttered in close-up photographs of the henna and bangles.

• Baraat: let the haath phool act as the ring. If you want a ring as well, choose one ring on the other hand in the same metal tone as the set.
• Walima: this is where a bride's statement ring shines. Hands are usually lighter, the outfit softer, and a clear or pastel stone ring becomes the focus.
• Nikah: often a simpler look. A single elegant ring suits, especially if the nikah is separate from the main event.
• The engagement ring, if worn: stack it with the statement ring on the same hand only if the two share a metal tone.

For guests

Sizing and comfort through a long evening

Wedding halls are warm, events run late and there is a lot of salty food. Fingers swell. A statement ring that fits perfectly at 6pm can be tight by midnight, and a large ring that is even slightly loose spins face-down all evening.

• Size for evening fingers. Try the ring on in the late afternoon rather than first thing in the morning.
• A heavy face needs a snug fit. If it spins, a small silicone sizer inside the band holds it upright.
• Take it off before washing hands for dinner, and put it straight into a zipped pocket or pouch, not on the basin.
