Dholki and mayun jewellery: flowers, gota, and what you can sit on the floor in

For a mayun, the classic look is yellow clothes with floral or gota jewellery: fresh genda and motia, or reusable gota-work pieces in yellow, orange, green and gold. For a dholki, wear light metal pieces you can sit, clap and dance in for hours. Keep real gold and anything delicate for the later functions, because haldi, oil and a crowded floor are hard on jewellery.
Dholki and mayun are not the same function
- Dholki: evenings of singing with the dholak in the days or weeks before a wedding, usually at home, often several nights running. Informal, crowded, mostly on the floor.
- Mayun: the ceremony where ubtan or haldi paste is applied to the bride, traditionally in yellow. In many families she dresses plainly afterwards until the mehndi.
- Guests at a mayun often wear yellow or bright colours too; at a dholki anything cheerful goes.
- Both are close-family functions, so there is less pressure to be formal and more to be comfortable.
Floral jewellery for the mayun
Phoolon ka zevar is the traditional mayun look and still the most photographed. Fresh flowers — motia, genda, roses — are threaded into a tikka, jhumkay, a haar, gajray for the wrists and haath phool.
- Order from the phool wala for the same day, ideally collected in the afternoon. Motia wilts within a few hours in heat.
- Keep the set in a cool place wrapped in a damp cloth until you put it on, not in a closed plastic bag in a warm car.
- Ask for soft thread ties rather than wire at the back of earrings and the tikka. Wire scratches.
- Anyone with pollen allergies or sensitive skin may do better with artificial flowers or gota.
- Expect floral jewellery to last one evening. That is part of its charm and part of its cost.
Gota and fabric jewellery
Gota jewellery — ribbon, mirror work, beads and thread shaped into tikkas, earrings and bangles — gives the same festive look without wilting, and it can be reused for the next cousin’s mayun. It is light, which matters over a long evening, and it suits yellow and orange outfits naturally.
Its weaknesses are practical: fabric stains easily, glue loosens in heat, and mirror pieces can catch a dupatta. Buy it a week early so there is time to fix a loose hook.

Dholki: comfort first
A dholki is mostly sitting on gaddas and chandnis, clapping, playing the dholak and occasionally dancing. Jewellery that works on a sofa does not always work on a floor for four hours.
- Choose studs or small jhumkas. Heavy earrings pull when your dupatta shifts every time you lean over.
- Wear two to four bangles, not a full stack. Clapping to a dholak all night with a dozen bangles is loud and tiring on the wrist.
- Skip rings with raised settings if you will be playing the dholak or the spoon on the matka. Flat bands or none.
- A fine chain or a simple pendant is plenty for the neckline. Nobody sees a necklace under a dupatta on the floor.
- Bring a small pouch. Things come off at dholkis and go missing under cushions.
Keeping haldi and ubtan off your jewellery
Haldi stains anything porous — pearls, thread, gota, fabric-wrapped bangles — and oil-based ubtan leaves a film on stones and plating. If you are applying ubtan to the bride, take off your rings and bracelets first. If ubtan lands on metal jewellery, wipe it off the same night with a soft damp cloth and a drop of mild soap, then dry it completely.
The bride, sisters and guests
- The bride: traditionally floral or gota at the mayun, and very little else. She is not meant to be dressed up yet.
- Sisters and close cousins: coordinated gota or floral pieces look good in photographs. Agree colours in advance.
- Guests: a floral gajra or one gota piece is a nice nod to the function. Light fashion earrings and a few bangles are equally right.
- Everyone: save the statement pieces for the mehndi and baraat, where they will actually be seen.
