How to order jewellery online in Pakistan without regretting it

Most people in Pakistan have now had at least one bad experience buying something online. A ring that arrived two sizes out. A chain that looked gold in the photo and looked like a keyring in the hand. A page that stopped replying the moment the parcel was delivered. So the hesitation before ordering jewellery is not paranoia — it is a reasonable response to a market where anyone with a phone can run a shop for a week and disappear.

The good news is that almost every bad order is preventable, and preventable in about ten minutes. Here is the order we would use ourselves.

Before you add anything to a bag

Three things tell you most of what you need to know about a seller, and none of them are the follower count.

1. 1Do they state materials specifically? “Stainless steel” is a family of alloys. “316L stainless steel” is a commitment. “Gold plated” means nothing without a micron number. A seller who knows their stock will tell you; a reseller flipping wholesale bags cannot, because they do not know either.
2. 2Is there a real, reachable phone number? Not a DM inbox. A number you can call before you order is a number you can call after you order.
3. 3Is the return or exchange window written down anywhere? Not promised in a comment — written on the site. A policy that only exists in a chat is a policy that changes when it becomes inconvenient.

Get the size right — this is where the money goes

Sizing is the single largest cause of exchanges, and exchanges cost you a week even when the seller handles them well. Five minutes with a ruler is the highest-return thing you can do in this entire process.

• Rings: wrap a 1 cm strip of paper around the base of the finger, mark the overlap, measure to the mark in millimetres. Check it clears the knuckle too. Measure in the evening, not first thing in the morning.
• Chains: 55 cm is the most-ordered men's length and sits just below the collarbone. 50 cm sits on it. For women, 40–45 cm is the usual range. Add 2–3 cm if a pendant is going on.
• Bracelets: measure the wrist, add 1.5–2 cm. Most men land at 20–22 cm, most women at 17–19 cm.
• Between two sizes on anything: take the larger. Links come out easily. Metal does not go back in.

Read the product page like a sceptic

Photographs are lit to flatter, and every seller in the country uses the same three lighting setups. The specifications are where the truth is, and the absence of a specification is itself information.

At checkout: the details that decide your week

Checkout on a decent Pakistani store takes about ninety seconds and needs no account. What you type into it matters more than people expect.

1. 1Give the phone number you actually answer during working hours. The courier calls before arriving. Nearly every failed first delivery in this country traces back to an unanswered phone, not a lost parcel.
2. 2Write the address the way a rider thinks — nearest landmark, street, house number, block. “Near Chase Up, Model Town Link Road” beats a formally correct postal address every time.
3. 3Say if you will not be there. A shop next door, a security desk, a neighbour. Put it in the order notes.
4. 4If it is a gift, ask for the invoice to be sent without prices. Any decent seller will do this. We do it on request.
5. 5Check the shipping line. Ours is a flat Rs.250 nationwide and free over Rs.5,000. A seller who adds a “COD charge” on top at the last screen is telling you how the rest of the relationship will go.

How cash on delivery actually protects you

You pay the rider, in cash, at your door. Nothing is charged when you place the order. That means the seller has already paid to pack and ship the parcel before they see a rupee — which is precisely why COD is the default here and why it keeps the market roughly honest.

It also means you have a genuine right of refusal. If the parcel arrives crushed, or it is obviously not what you ordered, you can decline it at the door and you are out nothing. That is a stronger position than any card payment gives you in this market. How long that parcel takes to reach you depends on the city.

The two minutes at the door

1. 1Check the parcel is sealed and the name on the label is yours before you hand over money.
2. 2Ask the rider to wait while you open it. Most will. If a courier's policy does not allow it, film yourself opening the parcel — one continuous clip from sealed packet to piece in hand.
3. 3Look at the piece for thirty seconds: right item, right colour, right size, clasp working, no scratches.
4. 4Keep the packaging until you are sure. An exchange with the original box is simple; without it, you are asking for a favour.

After it arrives

Wear it for an evening before you decide. Rings in particular feel different after an hour than they do in the first thirty seconds — a band that feels perfect immediately is often half a size tight by the end of the day, and one that feels slightly loose at first frequently turns out right.

If something is wrong, say so early. Exchange windows are short by design — ours is 7 days on unworn pieces — and the seller's willingness to help is at its highest in the first 48 hours, when the transaction is still fresh for both of you.

The ten minutes you spend checking materials, measuring a finger and typing a landmark into the address field is the entire difference between a good order and a story you tell people.
